MENEMSHA TEXACO SERVICE

SQUID ROW

THE STORY
On the dock side of the store is a wooden bench- a couple of 2x12”s actually- where folks have gathered for over half a century. The bench is marked by a driftwood plank emblazoned with red letters spelling out SQUID ROW. Painted in 1966 by Mary Jane Pease, the bench has been a gathering spot for taking in the harbor sights, tall tales, friendly catch ups, family photos, ice cream eating (and dripping) and a whole lot of coffee drinking. Dubbed Squid Row by Doug Fischer-because of the many squid fishers that congregate in the evening along the dock in front-the name has stuck ever since and has become synonymous with Menemsha Texaco. And as great grandma Bette would always ask, “Do you have time to sit a spell?” the answer, when it comes to Squid Row, must always be, “Yes.”

SIT A SPELL
We all likely agree that "sitting a spell," as Grandma Bette referred to it, is the best way to pass some time...
